The literal meaning of the Sunderban is beautiful jungle or beautiful forest. The official name of this jungle is Sunderban National Park. This park is located about 85kms away from Kolkata city. Sunderban is spread across West Bengal in India and Bangladesh. It is known as the true wonder of nature and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the largest mangrove belts and it covers an area of 10,500 sq km, wherein one third of it is covered in the marsh areas. The Sunderbans, since 1966 have known to be a wild life sanctuary. It is said that in the park there are approximately 400 Royal Bengal tigers and you will get to see 30,000 spotted deer in this dense wild life sanctuary.
Many tourists visit this place to see the famous Royal Bengal Tigers. Besides the tigers, when you are in this park you will spot saltwater crocodiles, Indian Cobras, various types of primates, Olive Ridley Turtle, King cobras, Wild Boar and also leopards. The dense Sunderban acts as a home for many species of mammals, fishes, birds, reptiles and also insects. It has been recorded that there are over 260 species of birds and 120 species of fish in this national park. In the rivers you will get to see the common Gangetic River Dolphin. More than 50 species of reptiles and no less than eight species of amphibians you will notice. You might also notice some sea gypsy fishing families who stay here in the park. The Hiron point in the park is the best place from where you can spot the various species of birds and animals in an easy way.You can visit the Sajnekhali Watch Tower that has a museum, a crocodile park and a Bonobibi Temple surrounding its premises.
The National Park is a collection of small islands. It is a great national park and many people visit this park. In case you are planning to visit this park then the most appropriate season to visit this park is winter season. The minimum temperature that you will experience here in the park will be 10 degrees in the winter whereas in the summer season the maximum temperature would be 34 degrees.
Reaching Sundarbans National Park is not a hard task. You can easily reach the park as the nearest airport is Calcutta. If you want then you can also hire safaris from Khulna and Dhaka.
